‘Firefly Squid’ Museum, Namerikawa, Toyama, Japan, 2001

The warm waters of Namerikawa Bay result in one of the World’s largest harvests of the ‘Firefly Squid’ - an unusual creature that is both a delicacy and a scientific phenomenon because of its bright fluorescent blue glow. The elliptical-form museum gives information and houses a restaurant and fish-market, wrapping around a new public square. Awarded the Chubu Architecture Award.
